New York City Center Guest Resident Company Morphoses / The
Wheeldon Company made its US debut last year to critical acclaim.
Founded by Christopher Wheeldon in 2007 as the worlds first
transatlantic ballet company, with a base at both City Center and
Sadlers Wells, London, the company has garnered praise
around the world. Morphoses returns for another exciting season
featuring two repertory programs to live music.
The first program features two American premieres: Christopher
Wheeldons new ballet Commedia set to Stravinskys Pulcinella
Suite, co-commissioned by New York City Center and
Sadlers Wells, with costumes by Isabel Toledo and sets by
Ruben Toledo; and Six Fold Illuminate, a Morphoses commissioned work by Canadian
choreographer Emily Molnar with costumes by Narciso Rodriguez.
Wheeldons award-winning Polyphonia (2001)
completes the first program. Monotones II will be
presented on October 1 as part of the Gala evening.
The second program includes two of Sir Frederick Ashtons
classic works from the 1960s: The Dream Pas de Deux and Monotones
II. Shutters Shut, choreographed by husband and
wife team Paul Lightfoot and Sol León to text by Gertrude Stein,
will have its New York premiere. Fools Paradise,
which premiered during the companys inaugural season in
2007 to great acclaim, returns to City Center.
