30 years ago, the first Encores! productions welcomed musical theater fans to a new kind of performance series, breathing brilliant life into a quintessentially American art form.
20 years ago, the Fall for Dance Festival made a bold promise to New York: international and local dance works in every style, all for the price of a movie ticket.

Tickets start at $45 (fees included) for every single show ($28 for younger audiences through our Access Club).
In a season entitled American Legacies, the Company explores Martha Graham’s relation to Americana and Modernism through classic works like The Rite of Spring and Appalachian Spring alongside Agnes DeMille’s 1942 classic Rodeo, and a new work by Jamar Roberts with a commissioned score by Grammy-winning composer Rhiannon Giddens.
Highlights include the restaging of Mad’moiselle, Annabelle Lopez Ochoa’s homage to Latina women; and Buscando a Juan, the most recent work by Eduardo Vilaro, and a fun-filled, interactive En Familia Matinee.
Featuring 27 of Sting’s most beloved songs, this thrillingly executed new dance-theater sensation by Kate Prince and ZooNation tells an uplifting tale of humanity and hope through world-class contemporary and street dance.
Dance Against Cancer will bring the global arts community together to fight cancer with this one-night-only annual performance to benefit the American Cancer Society. Past shows have included performances by the dance world’s brightest stars from New York City Ballet, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre, American Ballet Theatre, Ballet Hispánico, Martha Graham Dance Company, Jacob Jonas The Company, stars of the Broadway community and more.
An all-star cast sets sail in Titanic, including Chuck Cooper, Eddie Cooper, Andrew Durand, Drew Gehling, Ramin Karimloo, Judy Kuhn, Bonnie Milligan, Conrad Ricamora, Brandon Uranowitz, and Chip Zien. Directed by Anne Kaufman (The Sign in Sidney Brustein’s Window), this nearly sung-through show from creators Maury Yeston (Grand Hotel) and Peter Stone (1776) paints a heartrending portrait of the individuals whose dreams of America were dashed in the Atlantic.

The festival celebrates 20 years with international artists from seven different countries, including Paris Opera Ballet stars Hugo Marchand and Germain Louvet; India’s renowned Odissi dancer Bijayini Satpathy; the return of beloved Brazilian troupe Grupo Corpo; and two World Premiere City Center Commissions from artists Ephrat Asherie, Michelle Dorrance, and Adesola Osakalumi.
New York City Center and Dance Reflections by Van Cleef & Arpels present
Lucinda Childs’s 1979 masterpiece Dance, a renowned collaboration with Philip Glass and Sol LeWitt, is restaged for the peerless dancers of the Lyon Opera Ballet. This exclusive US engagement is presented as part of the Dance Reflections by Van Cleef & Arpels Festival.
Annual Gala Presentation
In this brand-new adaptation, directed by Tony Goldwyn and Savion Glover, Joey Evans—Ephraim Sykes (Ain’t Too Proud)—is a Black jazz singer in the 1940s struggling to make it big his way, with his sound, on Chicago’s vibrant nightclub circuit, alongside Loretta Devine (Dreamgirls) as Lucille and Aisha Jackson (Once Upon a One More Time) as Linda. This Rodgers and Hart classic incorporates additional numbers from the duo’s songbook, for a total of over 18 beloved tunes.
Artists at the Center
Direct from its five-star UK run, the New York City premiere of Song of Songs fuses Pam Tanowitz’s “transparently beautiful” (Independent) choreography with Pulitzer Prize winner David Lang’s “gorgeously clear” (The New York Times) choral settings of the Biblical love poem, performed live by six musicians.
For 65 years, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater has showcased the work of diverse choreographers, amplifying a myriad of voices alongside Mr. Ailey’s own. During this milestone anniversary season, City Center’s Resident Dance Company expands on that tradition, presenting a variety of world premieres and new productions to be announced, including Ronald K. Brown’s Dancing Spirit (2009). Other highlights include a new Ailey Classics program spanning the breadth of Mr. Ailey’s rich catalog, and performances of his must-see American masterpiece Revelations (with live music on some programs). In a return to pre-pandemic tradition, the magic of Ailey will shine for a full five weeks, giving audiences the opportunity to once again celebrate the holidays with Ailey.
Starring musical theater legend Sutton Foster (The Music Man) as Princess Winifred and Michael Urie (Ugly Betty) as Prince Dauntless, Once Upon a Mattress is the uproarious retelling of Hans Christian Anderson’s “The Princess and the Pea.” Led by Tony-nominated Encores! Artistic Director Lear deBessonet (Into the Woods, Lionel Bart’s Oliver!) and with a new concert adaptation by Amy Sherman-Palladino (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel), this musical fairytale promises both classic charms and new delights.
Take your seat at the legendary Jungle Inn nightclub for an electrifying musical telling the story of jazz through its self-proclaimed inventor: Jelly Roll Morton. Directed by Robert O’Hara (X: The Life and Times of Malcolm X) and written by Tony-winner George C. Wolfe (Rustin, Shuffle Along), Jelly’s Last Jam is set to Morton’s iconic music. The cast features Nicholas Christopher (Sweeney Todd), Joaquina Kalukango (Paradise Square), Billy Porter (Pose), Leslie Uggams (American Fiction), and more!
A two-week extravaganza of music, dance, and unforgettable performances, this year’s festival features the National Ballet of Spain, Premio Nacional de Danza winner Olga Pericet, and Gala Flamenca, featuring Manuel Liñán, Alfonso Losa, El Yiyo, Paula Comitre, and Sandra Carrasco.
This popular Monday evening series of conversations and performance excerpts offers audiences the unique opportunity to get closer to today’s great dance artists. Most evenings feature previews of our mainstage dance programming and are moderated by leading scholars and writers in the dance world. World famous for their theatricality, stunning technique, and unparalleled expression, Nederlands Dans Theater returns to City Center with a series of works from legendary choreographer William Forsythe, former NDT dancers Imre van Opstal and Marne van Opstal, and renowned choreographic team Sharon Eyal and Gai Behar.
Returning to City Center after last year’s successful spring season to celebrate its inaugural year under Artistic Director Robert Garland, Dance Theatre of Harlem once again presents a powerful vision for ballet in the 21st century. The 18-member, multi-ethnic company performs a forward-thinking repertoire that includes treasured classics as well as new works.
