MICHAEL S. ROSENBERG
President & CEO

Michael S. Rosenberg became President & CEO of New York City Center in 2022. Beginning with Drama Dept. (the Greenwich Village artist collective that he co-founded in 1995) and carrying to the present, Mike has helped develop and produce works by writers like Ayad Akhtar, Quiara Alegría Hudes, John Leguizamo, Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez, and David and Amy Sedaris. Many of the projects Mike has developed have gone on to Broadway, London’s West End, and tours around the world. As a presenter, he has brought an eclectic mix of artists to a variety of stages, including choreographer Jessica Lange in collaboration with architect Steven Holl, Jacques d’Amboise and National Dance Institute, Kyle Abraham, and the New Yorker Radio Hour. Mike previously served as the Managing Director of McCarter Theatre Center in Princeton, New Jersey from 2018 – 2022 and was the Managing Director of La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego, California from 2008 – 2018. At each of the companies he has run, Mike created unique business models, partnerships, and funding plans to sustainably support the work that artists want to do. This has included creating a writer-driven theater festival in New York with the Tribeca Film Festival and the city-wide WithOut Walls festival in San Diego. Mike’s work in communities to build diverse audiences and expand opportunities has been funded by New York’s Wallace Foundation and Bloomberg Philanthropies, as well as California’s Irvine Foundation. He has also worked with city, state, and federal governments to substantially increase arts funding.
