Infusing musical theater and dance into classrooms across New York City

Enjoy an engaging, curriculum-enhancing study of the performing arts with City Center In Schools, led by a roster of exemplary teaching artists. In addition to pre-designed programs that connect directly to City Center’s season of musical theater and dance performances, we collaborate with classroom teachers to create custom multi-session residency programs that help integrate performing arts into the school day.

Workshops directly connect to a City Center student matinee, and include our Behind the Curtain study guides, introduced through in-depth instructional lessons with a dedicated teaching artist.

Workshop Offerings

Workshops are provided as two sessions, scheduled at your school in the weeks before and after the student matinee performance. Our workshop offerings are the perfect activations to help students prepare and reflect on the performance.

Workshop Pricing includes two visits to your school in the weeks before and after the student matinee.

Residencies Block

Residencies offer students an in-depth experience of the performing arts over the course of a semester, and center around a specific performance or performing arts discipline.

Residency Offerings

Making a Musical (Grades 3 – 12)
Students learn about the process of creating a musical revival while adapting their own scene from the Encores! musical theater archives.

Discovering Encores! (Grades 3 – 12)
Centering choreography, music, and thematic connections from a current Encores! musical, students gain context for their matinee performance and connect the story to real life.

Exploring Dance Styles (Grades 3 – 12)
Students discover the styling, history, and culture of a dance form while collaborating to create an original number. Dance styles include flamenco, street dance, modern, jazz, and tap.

Elementary Dance (Grades K – 5)
Lessons in movement and musical rhythm foster a love of dance in younger students. This program culminates in a community sharing session.

Performance Prep (Grades K – 12)
This customizable residency program invites our professional teaching artists into your classroom or studio for additional support in preparation for an upcoming concert, graduation or other school event.  

Residency Costs include a minimum of two classrooms per visit

4 Session Residency: $1,600
7 Session Residency: $3,000
10 Session Residency: $4,000 per class

The 4 Session Residency Objective is to develop awareness of the chosen dance or musical theater subject matter, culminating in an in-classroom sharing. 

The 7 Session Residency Objective is to build understanding of fundamental elements of stage performance and theatrical design, culminating in an in-classroom sharing. 

The 10 Session Residency Objective is to deepen understanding of stage performance and theatrical design, including a visiting guest artist or creative team member, and culminating in a lecture-demonstration or small-scale performance.
