About

Up Next: ODISSI | Tradition & Innovation

The first event in our Studio 5 series on October 2 is an evening with acclaimed performer, educator, and master of Odissi Indian dance, Bijayini Satpathy. The evening features live dance and music performances as well as conversation with critic and historian Alastair Macaulay.

Go behind the scenes with Satpathy, coming from a sold-out run of ABHIPSAA — a seeking at Baryshnikov Arts and ahead of her October 7 & 8 performances of SITĀHARAN in City Center’s Fall for Dance Festival.

“[Satpathy] is riveting from the first moment, as she morphs between characters, movement qualities, poses. One moment she is a demon, the next a living, breathing sculpture with a serene, eternal smile... She is as riveting in stillness as in motion.”
Marina Harss, dance writer

This popular evening series of conversations and performance excerpts offers audiences the unique opportunity to get closer to today’s great dance artists. Most evenings feature previews of our mainstage dance programming and are moderated by leading scholars and writers in the dance world.

We’re proud to offer select Studio 5 evenings as live-streamed events, and as on-demand video content. Check back as dates approach for details and more information.
