About
Formidable execution … rendered with effortless power and athleticism
Returning to New York for their first major engagement in over four decades, the world-renowned Dutch National Ballet (DNB) presents two programs of breathtaking artistry from the greatest choreographers of the last 50 years. Experience a rich sampling of the company’s vast ballet repertoire, featuring former Bolshoi superstars Olga Smirnova —“a da Vinci of ballet” (The New York Times)—and Jacopo Tissi.
DNB Director Ted Brandsen represents over 20 years of artistic leadership with his piece The Chairman Dances, a joyful, ballroom-inspired number set to John Adams's music of the same name. Hans van Manen is internationally recognized as one of the grand masters of contemporary ballet. The DNB resident choreographer’s work is represented by Frank Bridge Variations, an exercise in contrasts; Adagio Hammerklavier, a classic of 20th century dance; and 5 Tangos, a dynamic hybrid of ballet and tango set to the music of Argentine composer and bandoneon master Astor Piazzolla.
The company also presents European legend Jiří Kylián’s stunning Wings of Wax, inspired by the Greek myth of Icarus. American master Jerome Robbins is represented by the exquisite Chopin duet Other Dances. Duets from rising choreographic stars include Wubkje Kuindersma’s Two and Only, a tender and powerful male duet featuring the songs of Michael Benjamin, and Thando by Olivier Award-winning South African choreographer Mthuthuzeli November. The newest piece is a US premiere by recently announced Associate Artist Alexei Ratmansky.
