Get a behind-the-scenes look at the making of a musical theater professional in this exclusive master class series. Now in its third season, audiences have a chance to watch award-winning musical theater veterans Tom Kitt, Stephanie J. Block, and Lea Salonga as they coach emerging artists on skills that are vital on and off the stage.
Participating artists for Front & Center are chosen through an online audition process.

Be True to What You Do
Stephanie J. Block’s master class illuminates the techniques of a Broadway performer and offers the audience the opportunity to hear reflections and stories from her personal experience. Block encourages participants to find the right song for them and to let their performance reveal their true selves. She focuses on what makes each individual interpretation of their piece unique and captivating for an audience.
Artists will be chosen through an online audition process beginning on December 17 and closing on January 7. Applicants will be notified on January 17.

Finding a Way In
Lea Salonga’s master class helps students get to the heart of their performance. Focusing on song interpretation, Ms. Salonga’s approach zeros in on the acting behind the singing and the story behind the lyric. She also discusses how the communication of a song can vary according to venue, from a more intimate theatrical performance to a large concert hall. The audience is encouraged to engage in conversation around the work and techniques presented.

The Original Musicals of Tomorrow
Tom Kitt’s composition master class is designed for emerging composers and lyricists, challenging them to tell new stories in musical theater. He examines song structure, musical embodiment of character, and how the composer/lyricist moves from an idea to song writing. This workshop provides participants and observers with a look into how stories from the world around us translate to the stage and become musicals.
