Lynne and Richard Pasculano Student Matinees

This program presents students with the opportunity to experience live dance performances, often for the first time. Each season, City Center Education hosts three matinees for school groups. Students are introduced to new art forms and analyze the productions they see using materials provided by City Center. Teachers are provided with study guides to contextualize the themes of the show and make curricular connections for their classes. Students also learn about audience behavior and develop an appreciation for the performing arts. Student matinees can serve as a primer for our more in-depth offerings and are often coupled with in-school workshop or residency experiences.

For Students: $2 each (includes ticket to one professional performance)

There will be one $50 fee per school for all participating Educators. This fee includes a ticket to the student matinee, a study guide and a professional development workshop.

Workshops

In-school workshops provide students with a creative, critical, and collaborative study of the performing arts. During two workshops with City Center’s teaching artists or professionals from our mainstage, students learn material from the performance they will see at City Center and create their own original work, which they share with their peers. Teachers receive a study guide and attend professional development sessions where they explore techniques and artistic tools to utilize in the classroom.

For Students: $15 each (includes two in-school workshops and a ticket to one professional performance)

There will be one $50 fee per school for all participating Educators. This fee includes a ticket to the student matinee, a study guide and a professional development workshop.

Please note that schools must register a minimum of two classes in order to be eligible for Workshops.

Residencies

Our residencies offer comprehensive educational experiences, with seven-week and ten-week options. This experience immerses students in the creative process with master teaching artists while being empowered to create their own work, take risks, and work as an ensemble. Students develop the language and conceptual skills necessary to demonstrate fluency within their discipline and engage in reflective discussion, using student-generated criteria. City Center's Education staff and classroom teachers meet to outline customized goals and strategies for each residency. In culmination of their work, students participate in sharing sessions either in school or at City Center. The residency includes attendance at a professional performance at City Center.

Prices vary based on the customization of the experience. For more information, please contact Eric Szkarlat, Education Associate at ESzkarlat@NYCityCenter.org or via phone at 212.763.1221.

All residencies include tickets to one professional performance, one study guide, and one professional development workshop per teacher.

Elementary Dance Residencies

These comprehensive residencies introduce students from grades PreK-5 to the language of dance, and range from 8 to 32 weeks. Dance teaching artists actively collaborate with teachers to engage students in dance as a tool for communication and self-expression, drawing curricular connections. Students work independently and in groups to learn basic movement and choreographic skills in music and rhythmic contexts. These residencies focus on preparing students for continuing instruction in dance and conclude with an in-school sharing session for school communities and families.

  • Prices vary based on the customization of the experience. For more information, please contact Eric Szkarlat, Education Associate at ESzkarlat@NYCityCenter.org or via phone at 212.763.1221.

Connections

The Connections program gives mature dance students, grades 7-12, a glimpse into the professional dance world by engaging them in the work of City Center’s Choreography Fellows and the work of small and mid-sized dance companies. Through workshops hosted at City Center, participating companies share their unique aesthetic with students. Workshops include a professional dance master class and a Q&A designed to stimulate a conversation between students and artists.

Cost: $15 per student
