Encores! Off-Center

Every Summer, Encores! Off-Center presents three groundbreaking musicals from the past, reimagined by innovative artists, for today’s audiences.

Encores! Off-Center 2019 Season

A Musical
June 26 – 29

Directed by Anne Kauffman
Based on the best-selling Studs Terkel book of the same name, Working: A Musical evokes the unsung nobility of American workers.  From the hardworking cashier to the tired steelworker, this musical exalts the hopes, dignity, and sense of purpose shared by each one of us.

Adapted by Stephen Schwartz and Nina Faso, this new incarnation of Working incorporates stories from modern communities making it a living, breathing testament to the people who make this country run. Two new songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda enrich the score by an already illustrious list of songwriters: Craig Carnelia, Micki Grant, Mary Rodgers and Susan Birkenhead, and James Taylor.

July 10 & 11

Directed by Laurie Woolery
Escape into the absurdly funny world of Promenade where two fugitives, known only as 105 and 106, navigate the world of haves and have-nots. A zany anti-adventure written by the “mother of avant-garde theater,” Maria Irene Fornes, and featuring an eclectic musical score by Judson Church Reverend Al Carmines, Promenade promises outlandish fun that examines the ways in which social status can both liberate and imprison.

Road Show
July 24 – 27

Directed by Will Davis
At what point does the pursuit of the American Dream become an empty enterprise? Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman’s Road Show is a larger-than-life account of the Mizner brothers during the Alaskan gold rush and the Florida real estate boom of the early 1900s. Loosely based on a true story, follow Addison and Wilson Mizner on their ambitious and, ultimately, ill-fated quest for gold.

The Lobby Project

Young Artists Mentorship

Presented in tandem with Encores! Off-Center productions, The Lobby Project is a series of free performances, conversations, and readings that will place each musical in the context of its legacy and provide insights into the work the audience is about to experience. The events will take place in City Center’s beautiful Grand Tier lobby one hour before curtain and are free for that evening’s ticket holders.

This summer, The Civilians are teaming up with New York City Center as Artists in Residence to create and premiere investigative theater pieces focusing on each of the three Encores! Off-Center productions. With their characteristic journalistic curiosity and playful artistry, The Civilians will illuminate their creative process by exploring the impact the original productions of the Off-Center revivals have had on audiences and artists alike.
