Encores! Off-Center

Jul 10 – 11, 2019

Tickets start at $25

“An exquisite piece of musical theater…Mr. Carmines's and Miss Fornes's collaboration stands as a comparably perfect mating of two voices that speak the same boldly simplistic language.”

The New York Times

“Fornes took a mad swan dive, deep into her subconscious, and unleashed a new American theater: joyous, spontaneous, exhilarating. Hail to City Center’s Encores! Off-Center for giving Promenade a long over-due revival. Feast in the wonder that was and is Maria Irene Fornes. She’ll liberate you.”

– John Guare, Playwright

Escape into the absurdly funny world of Promenade where two fugitives, known only as 105 and 106, navigate the world of haves and have-nots while on the run from the law. A zany anti-adventure written by the “mother of avant-garde theater,” Maria Irene Fornes, and featuring an eclectic musical blend by Al Carmines, Promenade promises lighthearted fun while exposing the ever-present chasm between the rich and the poor and observing the ways in which social status can both liberate and imprison.

Promenade is part of the 2019 Encores! Off-Centerseason along withWorking: A Musical and Road Show. These three seldom-performing gems each explore and re-examine the concept of the American Dream. Read more
